What happens at the bench

Each line on the list comes from a different set of hands and tools. This is what each one involves, so you know what you are paying for.

Piercing the brass

A sheet of brass is drawn with the pattern, then cut through with a fine chisel and a light hammer, hole after hole. The holes are what make the lantern: they decide the star and petal shapes it throws onto your walls.

Stitching khayamiya

Coloured cotton is cut into lotus, star and arabesque shapes, laid onto a heavy cotton backing and turned under at the edge with tiny, close stitches. Nothing is glued and nothing is printed.

Setting mosaic glass

Small pieces of amber, cobalt and clear glass are set one by one onto a shaped brass frame and grouted, so the shade glows in a pattern of coloured cells once a light is inside it.

Engraving copper

The tray is beaten into shape with a raised rim, then the face is chased and engraved with a border and a central medallion. The folding stand is turned wood, pinned so it lies flat when you are not using it.

Embroidering covers

Covers are cut from cotton or linen and worked with a band or medallion of embroidery, then finished with a concealed zip along one edge. You add your own 45 cm inner.

How we work

From your message to the crate at your door

El Momtaz Decor is a small Alexandria workshop and shop that makes and sells decorative pieces: the lantern, the panel, the shade, the tray and the cushion cover. We are not a design studio and we do not come to your home. What we do is narrower and, we think, better for it: we make a short list of objects well, describe each one exactly, and post it to you in a crate that will survive the trip.

An order starts on the order form. You choose the pieces and quantities, tell us the country they are going to, and the form works out the cost of the pieces plus the crate for your region. Nothing is charged at that point. We read the request, check that every piece you chose is on the shelf in the finish you asked for, and reply by e-mail with a secure payment link for the exact total. If something is not ready, the reply says so and gives you the date it will be.

Once payment arrives, the pieces are given a last polish or press, photographed on the packing bench so you can see the actual items going into your crate, and packed. Lanterns and shades are wrapped in felt and fixed in place with blocks so they cannot shift; panels and covers are rolled around a card tube rather than folded, so the appliqué edges do not crease. The crate is closed, labelled and handed to a tracked carrier, and the tracking reference comes to you the same day.

What we value is the thing being exactly what the page says. If a lantern is listed at 48 cm, it measures 48 cm from the base to the top of the cap, not counting the chain. If a panel is listed as hand-stitched, there is no machine seam on its face.

What we turn down is just as plain. We do not plan rooms, choose colour schemes or advise on where things should go. We do not hang panels, mount lanterns or connect lights. We do not buy or sell antiques. And we do not make pieces in sizes outside the list, because a size we have not made before is a size we cannot price honestly.

Questions

What people ask before ordering

Yes. Every lantern has an open collar in its cap, wide enough for a standard plug-in pendant set, which you buy locally so it matches the plugs and rules where you live. We send the lantern without any electrical part and we do not fit or connect one. If you prefer flame, each lantern comes with a removable glass cup that takes a tealight or a pillar candle up to 7 cm across.

Pieces leave Alexandria within three working days of payment. After that it depends on the region: two to four working days inside Egypt, five to eight around the Gulf and North Africa, six to ten for Europe and the United Kingdom, seven to twelve for North America and eight to fourteen for Australia, New Zealand and Asia. The shipping page has the cost for each region.

The pattern family is the same, because each size is drawn from one master template. The holes are not identical, because every one is struck by hand. Expect small differences in spacing and edge, which is how you can tell a pierced lantern from a stamped one. The light they throw is the same star-and-petal pattern.

Brass darkens because the air reaches it. Wipe it with a dry soft cloth every few weeks, keep it away from steam and salt air where you can, and polish it with a brass cream once or twice a year if you want the bright shine back. If you prefer the warm brown patina that comes with age, simply leave it; the metal is not harmed either way.

Yes. Tell us within 14 days of delivery and send it back unused in its crate within the next 14 days. Return postage is yours for a change of mind; the price of the piece is refunded to the card or account you paid with within five working days of it reaching us. The returns page has the details.

No. Khayamiya panels come in 60 × 60 cm and 100 × 150 cm, the two sizes our templates and backing cloth are cut for. Choosing between them, or hanging two smaller panels side by side, is the way to fill a different space.
